News monitoring automation — get articles that mention your company as soon as they appear

Collecting articles that mention your company or a competitor’s name and getting notified automatically is very much doable. The daily manual searching disappears, and new coverage reaches the person in charge the moment it appears.

First, what to choose — register, subscribe, or build

Approach What it costs What you give up instead
Register for a portal or search engine alert Nothing Can’t see beyond what that service has indexed
Subscribe to a monitoring service Monthly subscription fee Locked into the items and formats the vendor defines
Build it yourself Development time, operational responsibility You fix it yourself when it breaks

The criterion is scope. If portal search catches everything, registering is enough; if the vendor’s product already covers the sources you want, subscribing is faster. When neither is true — when the targets are fixed, like industry publications, institutional notices, or overseas media — building it yourself is the answer.

Below are the four decisions to make when you choose to build it yourself.

① What to collect

  • Keywords as a set — register not just the company name but product names, competitor names, and industry terms together.
  • Deduplicate at the collection stage — many domestic outlets have syndication deals with news agencies, so the same story goes up on several media at once. Without merging by a unique identifier, one event becomes ten alerts.
  • Write down the source scope — what is and isn’t collected must be documented so that a missing article can be told apart as a bug or a design decision.

② How to send it — the 알림톡 rules

When sending via KakaoTalk, you use 알림톡. Not just any text goes out — only approved templates can be sent, and review completes within 2 business days.

What decides the review is whose need the message goes out for. The Kakao guide states that “notices sent intermittently at the sender’s need” are not allowed. Conversely, a response to something the recipient requested themselves is treated as an informational message.

So the design goes with a structure where the message goes only to people who registered keywords, and the template body states that the alert is about a keyword the recipient registered. That one line is what separates a “blast notice” from a “requested alert”. A design that bulk-sends to a list fails the review.

Prepare SMS fallback as well, for when delivery fails.

Order matters — settle the template wording and the consent structure first, then develop.

When you build it yourself, this is usually where the time goes. Collection takes a few days, but a rejected template means restructuring, and the rejection often comes down to a single line of wording. Ask us about the alert channel first and we’ll pin down a form that passes before you build.

③ How often to send

Too frequent alerts get ignored, and once people start ignoring them, the automation is pointless.

Set the collection interval and the send interval separately. Collect often, but batch the sends. There’s no reason urgent keywords and reference keywords run on the same interval.

④ How you find out it has stopped

The most dangerous failure is the silent one. When the target site’s structure changes or an authentication expires, collection stops but the screen still looks fine. You can’t tell a missing alert from a missing article, so you only find out days later.

So we build a dashboard alongside it. When collection trends per keyword, source share, and the recent collected list sit on one screen, you know the same day.

“Set up” and “arriving” are different things, and the one to check is the latter.

A couple of keywords you’re searching right now is all we need.

You don’t need to prepare a full list. Tell us what you don’t want to miss, and we’ll first lay out which sources we can reach and where the alerts can be sent.
